Progresses on Burning Properties of Full Surface Fire of Large-Scale Oil Tanks
The experiments on the burning properties of crude oil pools conducted home and overseas in recent years are summarized briefly. It was pointed that the burning rate of crude oil, which was below 4mm/min generally, had close relationship with crude oil type, tank diameter, wind speed, environmental temperature, oil layer depth and water content. Thermal radiation was one of the most hazardous aspects of large-scale oil tank fires and most of them came from flame base. The thermal radiation for leeward was much higher than that for windward accordingly. Thermal radiation for some leeward sites was less than that of windward sites due to smoke blockage effect. The thermal radiation during boilover was much higher than that during steadystate burning and the thermal radiation for leeward was higher than that for windward. Boilover of crude oil tanks related closely with oil layer depth, water layer in the tank bottom and the emulsified water content. The 0.5-3% emulsified water content was essential for oil boilover. However, boilover mechanism of crude oil containing emulsified water is not well known yet and needs further study.
