On The Use of Elebators for Fire Escape from Ultra High-rise Buildings
In accordance with the Means of Escape Code of Hong Kong, signage showing a statement -In case of fire, do not use the Lift is required to be posted at each elevator lobby in Hong Kong. People in Hong Kong and in many other cities have long been educated to use staircases in stead of elevator for escape in case of fire. In many Asian cities, numerous buildings over 60 storeys have been constructed in the past decades. Fire safety is obviously one of the major concerns for building designers, building occupants as well as governments. Previously, people believed if fire happened in an ultra high-rise building, this might merely be limited by fire resisting construction to a region and the occupants in the affected zone would merely be required to escape. However, the collapse of World Trade Center on the 2001 attacks has caused people to re-consider the evacuation strategies of occupants in ultra high-rise buildings. The idea of using elevators for fire escape has been widely studied in recent years. This paper reviews the issues of using elevators for escape and outlines some elevator evacuation simulation results.
