Water vapor is wildly used for fire extinguishing in industry due to its economy and convenience. While, the previous studies on fire extinguishing with water vapor are more about the mechanism-based researches, and the fire extinguishing efficiency experiments are hard to find. In this paper, experimental study on extinguishing diesel oil pool fire with water vapor has been carded out. The temperature field of the water vapor jet flow was measured at first, then the fire extinguishing efficiency experiments were carried out both under the condition of total flooding protection and local flooding protection. Based on the experiments, several conclusions can be inferred. Firstly, the effects of the temperature field of the water vapor jet flow can not affect the flame-cooling a lot. Secondly, the fire is difficult to extinguish by the way of displacement of oxygen in total flooding protection. Thirdly, the dominant mechanism of fire extinguishing could be the kinetic effects of the water vapor in the local flooding protection.
