Predictions of Transient Rotor Aerodynamics Using an Efficient Time Marching Free Vortez Method

An efficient time-marching free vortex method was developed to predict the evolution of the rotor wake aerodynamics during transient and maneuvering flight conditions. To control the numerical instability and insure the time accuracy of the wake solution, a variable explicit artificial dissipative term was directly introduced into an explicit time-marching algorithm with second order accuracy. The free vortex wake model was then validated for transient conditions with measured rotor forces following rapid ramp increases in collective and cyclic pitch in hover and low speed forward flight conditions as well as sudden imposed angular pitch rate in hover. It is shown that the time-dependent growth and convection of the vorticity in the rotor wake, and wake distortion induced by the maneuver play significant roles in transient and maneuvering rotor aerodynamics.
