GRASS YIELD ESTIMATION USING A 3-DIMENSIONAL LASER SCANNER
To create a growth distribution map, the grass top altitude in grasslands was measured by a 3-dimensional laser scanner (LS). By subtracting a base ground terrain map from the grass top altitude map, a grass height map was generated. The coefficient of determination between the height measured with the LS and by hand was 0.31.A correlation (coefficient of determination: 0.37) was also found between the averaged height in 1 m2 areas and fresh grass yield. The potential of LS use for grass height and yield mapping was shown. Although fine mapping of grass height was impossible in the past, it was realized by use of the LS. The grass height distribution was evidently affected by land reclamation. Soil fill height and grass height are clearly related. This information must give very helpful knowledge about field management for farmers, agronomists, and soil scientists.
