A real-time measuring system for tree canopy parameters

To achieve precision application of pesticides and fertilizers to fruit trees thus reducing negative impacts to the environment as well as improving fruit safety, a real-time fruit tree canopy parameters measuring system was constructed to guide precision spraying in orchard. This system consists of crop identification unit, vehicle attitude measurement unit, master control unit, data logger unit, and a CAN bus connecting various microprocessors involved. Preliminary experiments were conducted, on five adjacent trees with regular cylinder-shaped canopy on the campus for three times, where four independent ultrasonic sensors (SensComp 600) were used to measures target trees canopy on a time-division basis. System sampling rate was 5 times/s, and tractor-traveling speed 0.3m/s. Experiments showed that the system could detect fruit tree canopy size in real-time, thus providing a good measuring and controlling platform for precision spraying based on tree canopy. This paper introduced the design principle of the system and the related test results.
