WEB-BASED MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS AND DECISION SUPPORT IN PRECISION AGRICULTURE

With advancement of Information technology implementation in precision agriculture, software solutions require expanded scope to function beyond wired environment, capable of integrating and communicating with varied electronic devices, provide real-time monitoring, trigger notification due to irregularity and produce data reporting to facilitate decision making. PAMS. (Precision Agriculture Management System) is a web-based software system that realizes remote administration of wireless MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensor networks set up in distant locations. Newly placed sensors within range are auto-detected for ease of configuration. A high-level dashboard view of sensor mapping provides visual indication of sensor locations, battery health status, seamless weather information and fault reports. With a real-time monitoring mechanism, upon threshold failure, alert messages are escalated to subscribers via electronic mail and Short Message System. Equipped with two-way communication feature, commands could be issued to respective sensors to initiate corrective actions. The system supports various sensor types and flexibly caters for frequent-changing analogue conversion formulae. It acts as a platform to interface with custom-made plug-ins, where each plug-in could be enabled or disabled via a management console. Developed in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction, the features could be exposed via web services to be accessed by other instruments, such as mobile devices. The system further serves as a data collection centre for trend analysis and statistical process control. Soil properties data consisting nutrients, humidity and temperature facilitates decision support on fertilization, irrigation, pollination estimation and harvesting scheduling. Data reports are stored in database could be exported for further analysis. All transactions are recorded in audit trail for historical logging purpose. In order to improve performance and information presentation, PAMS. implements AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) technology for smoother data retrieval and minimized visualization impact. As the system is developed using platform-independent programming language, it is portable across various computer operating systems without the need to modify the source codes. Development and deployment costs are maintained at manageable level. PAMS. is customizable to vertical applications for various segments to cater for specific needs. For example, a scaled-down version that only keeps track of nutrient levels could be released at an affordable price, to cater for individual farmers in underdeveloped or developing nations. Having limited economy of scale, the farmers could utilize the system to obtain precise information, in order to gain better yield and return. Corporate entities could benefit from a full-blown version to manage commodity plants. With readiness of prediction models and electronic device integration modules, the system could be expanded to advanced features including sunlight sensing, yield forecasting, decease control and robot navigation. Further tailoring could be developed for high-value crops and commodity plants.
