The Empirical Study on the Equity Structure and Performance of Commercial Banks in China: Based on the Data from 2003 to 2008
Since the reform of shareholding system in Chinas commercial banks, the governance efficiency of commercial banks has been improved greatly. However, there are still many problems, constraining the commercial banks to improve their performance. This paper mainly studies the governance situation in Chinas commercial banks from the aspect of their equity structure and performance, facing the competitive pressure and financial crisis of foreign commercial banks. This paper chooses the eight domestic listed commercial banks as the research samples, by researching the relationship between the equity structure and the performance of commercial banks, especially we build an econometric model and give an empirical analysis result. The study finds: the proportion of State shares is a negative correlation with the performance of the banks, the proportion of Corporate shares is not relevant with the performance of the banks, the proportion of circulation shares is a positive correlation with the performance of the banks, the concentration ratio(CR) of equity is a negative correlation with the performance of the banks. According to the empirical study we find out the main equity structure factors which impact the performance of commercial banks, then we put forward the feasible proposals respectively from the two respects of commercial banks and government.
