Evaluation of three newly developed ergonomic measures to reduce the risk of low back pain among gypsum bricklayers

The effects were evaluated of a combination of three ergonomic measures designed to reduce the risk of low back complaints among gypsum bricklayers. The measures focused on optimizing working height and reducing carrying distances. A within-subjects controlled field study was used to assess productivity, work demands and workload. A slight increase in the duration and frequency of working between knee and hip height during the course of a full working day and a slight decrease in the duration and frequency of working below knee height during the finishing task was found. The effect of the total intervention on the risk of low back complaints can be expected to be small.
