Safety in the operating room - a multi-levelled ergonomic approach

Safety in surgery depends on many factors of which a large part can be improved by means of existing ergonomic guidelines and insights. This ergonomic knowledge can be applied at several levels, for example to enlarge the knowledge and skills of the surgeon, to improve the quality of the technical equipment and to support the performance of the surgical team. In the current circumstances of surgery, there still is not much known how to apply this ergonomic knowledge into practice. Research projects that are embedded in the design of a Surgeons Cockpit revealed in national and international studies on the current state of the minimal invasive procedures, that there is a need for quality control procedures of equipment, a need to introduce awareness of ergonomic guidelines, the need for standardized protocols, including standardized actions and the need for a more sophisticated ranking system in order to categorize the skills of the surgeon.
