Physical Risk Management Model as Part of Safety Management System in Elderly Health Care
The controlled intervention study was carried out in 12 elderly care units in western and eastern Finland with both a baseline-and in 12 months a follow-up evaluation. The evaluation included organizational and individual outcome measures: safety culture questionnaire, risk assessments, a questionnaire about nurses health, experienced strain, musculoskeletal symptoms, psychosocial factors, safety attitudes and the quality of care. The interventions took place on the organizational as well as on the unit level. On the organizational level a work group lead by a nursing line manager devised a physical risk management model with clear directions for practical work in compliance with legal requirements, by stipulating staff roles and responsibilities, patient assessment systems, risk assessments conduct, performance monitoring, training provisions, and equipment responsibilities, acquisition and maintenance. On the unit level the ideas of the risk management model were formulated for inclusion into work instructions. The most demanding patient situations were first practised, then applied in patient care.
