Model-Based Systems Engineering Approach to Sustainable Development and Human-Centered Sustainability

Previous research in systems engineering indicates that the long-term system sustainability relies heavily upon demonstrated effectiveness of the total system. This includes the human operators, support personnel, controllers, and other actors. Another element considered is the loosely-defined customer satisfaction. This paper develops conceptual foundations and practical applications of the systems engineering approach to achieving sustainable development. This concept is then illustrated through implementation of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for sustainable human systems integration. Human systems integration is the interdisciplinary technical management process for integrating human considerations within and across all system elements. The Human Systems Integration component in systems engineering recognizes the human as an integral element of every sustainable system and ensures that human considerations have a prominent place in the integrated design and sustainable development of systems throughout the total system lifecycle.
