Improving the ergonomics of diluting cytostatics
A project concerning the ergonomics of diluting cytostatics was carried out in the pharmacy of the Tampere University Hospital. The objective of the project was to find a means of reducing the musculoskeletal workload involved in the process of diluting cytostatics. A workassessment form was used for obtaining the work descriptions, identifying the loading work phases, and recording the solutions. During the project, many aspects of cytostatic dilution work were found to need attention with respect to the musculoskeletal system. The muscle load was measured using electromyography (EMG) of the muscles of the upper limbs and neck-shoulder region during the dilution into the infusion pouch and the bottle. The EMG measurements showed that the use of the infusion pouch required less muscle activity than the infusion bottle.
