The Importance of Preparing Management for Participation in an Ergonomics Program

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SME) located in rural and remote locations generally do not possess the resources to conduct ergonomics programs on their own and a third-party consultancy engagement may not address long-term needs. Successful interventions require a framework that identifies stakeholder roles and responsibilities, and develops a social construct to build knowledge transfer capacity. In this manner, organizational context is accounted for in the adaptations. Participatory Ergonomics (PE) is a strategy that applies this style of intervention by involving key company stakeholders in the process. While many PE models have been promoted in the literature, an approach which establishes a bi-partite ergonomics team can address the context of SME. The need for skilled ergonomic facilitators and a step-wise approach is well documented. The role of management personnel is also recognized to have a significant importance upon the process. However, there has been little guidance for developing and sustaining managerial engagement. Often management will buy-in to a PE concept, but upfront description of roles and responsibilities if often lacking. Management must recognize that there must be a shift in their traditional management paradigms; a willingness to take part in the project by all levels of management to develop sufficient organizational “pull; and a commitment to provide sufficient resources (personnel, financial, technological).
