Ergonomic Design: A New Challenge for Projects in Practice
This Company is a large oil company that has undertaken to create a standard procedure to include ergonomic studies in each of the companys current projects. This paper describes the challenges faced in creating a standard procedure that: a) guides the execution of ergonomic studies; and b) promotes the implementation of the resulting ergonomic design. The working group that developed the standard procedure includes ergonomic experts from different areas in the company. The goal of the standard procedure is to provide guidance in “how to perform ergonomic studies in all current projects, by developing an ergonomic analysis of work. The standard procedure requires that the process be supervised by an ergonomics expert at each stage of the project. Depending on the level of complexity of the ergonomic design required, the supervising expert might be a company expert in ergonomics assigned to work with the project staff, one of the projects own architects or engineers, or an outside subcontractor. The supervising expert is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the ergonomics study according to standard procedure guidelines. The standard procedure adopted by the company involves five stages: identifying the opportunity for an ergonomics study, the conceptual design, the basic design, execution detail specifications and supervised implementation and maintenance, and finally, the disassembly. Innovations such as the development and implementation of a standard procedure for ergonomics studies in each existing project require a change in the companys culture. Accordingly, the new procedure will require extensive dissemination efforts tailored to the companys different hierarchical levels, as well as the training of professionals in ergonomic design. In order to face the challenges posed and achieve the projects goals, the work group also created a supplemental action plan that supports the inclusion of newly created standard procedure in all company projects. The action plan involves dissemination of the standard procedure at the various company levels, personnel training, and future evaluation of the practical implementation of the procedure.
