Ergonomic work analysis in the Nutrition Department of the University of S(a)o Paulo (USP) Hospital

The objective of this research was to analyze the work performed in the Nutrition department of the University of S(a)o Paulo (USP) Hospital in order to provide recommendations for its upcoming reform with the intention of modernizing the equipment used and improving the current processes. For the 2009 IEA congress, we will focus our presentation on the systematical observations carried-out in the nurserys baby bottle washing process (part of the Nutrition Dept.) with the use of the software Kronos 2.4, developped by Alain Kerguelen with the help of ANACT (Agence Nationale pour lAmélioration des Conditions de Travail). For the systematical observations it was decided to realize three films corresponding to the three steps of the washing process, which are: baby bottle soaking, washing and rinsing. These films were analyzed by way of the Kronos(R) software which allowed to identify and analyze the following elements: 1) inclination of the workers spine during the activity (“straight, “slightly inclined and “very inclined); 2) manual activities; 3) workers displacement. The use of the statistical analysis and graphs created with the Kronos(R) software, allowed to understand with better accuracy the work activity observed. For example, the position of the workers spine was observed in the “slightly inclined position during 82.57% of the total time. Concerning the manual activities, most of the time is taken by the activity of rotating the wrist with 42.62% of the time being dedicated to opening and scrubbing the baby bottles. Finally, during 99.99% of the time, the worker works standing still. The results of the systematical observations allowed making a few considerations. The activity of washing baby bottles could be performed in the sitting position had the work been conceived for that. In the current configuration there is not enough space under the counter top to accommodate the persons legs. In addition, the depth of the sinks and the position of the faucets cause a constraint on the workers posture, with a constant forward leaning. The need for conceiving new utensils was also identified in order to reduce the repeated wrist rotation when scrubbing the baby bottles. An alternative could be to automate this operation.
