Training for Automated Systems
This paper describes the process used to develop a training program for using automated equipment for aircraft descent. Current practice is to teach procedural information only. The goal here was to (a) determine what conceptual information might be useful to pilots and (b) evaluate the effectiveness of the addition of this conceptual information to the training program in terms of pilot comprehension. Preliminary data suggest that the addition of conceptual information to the training program had a positive effect on pilot knowledge, even for experienced pilots.
