Impact factors on teamwork performance in glass cockpit aircraft from the cognitive systems engineering perspective

Studies on distributed cognition and macrocognition in teams have been trying to uncover cognitive processes in cooperative environments and how aircrews cope with complexities. This study aims to identify how teams formed by three agents (pilot, co-pilot and aircraft) deal with systems complexity in high technological glass cockpit aircraft. In particular, the study identifies variables affecting teamwork performance, in light of cognitive systems engineering. The research method adopted cognitive task analysis strategies, especially documental analysis, interviews and in loco observations. The data made it possible to characterize the flight crew work domain from the perspective of joint cognitive systems as well as identify a set of factors that affect teamwork cognition, such as shared situation awareness, communication, coordination, resilience and control.
