New practices in risk management: analysis of crew activity in a real flight
The daily activity of a commercial pilot involves making decisions more frequently than we suppose, even in the modern cockpits. From the acceptance of the aircraft to the latter landing on the gate, and even during the whole operative phase, the crew is confronted to certain situations usually unexpected that require making decisions related to multiple instances implied on a flight. The traditional tendency of high risk systems, such as aviation, to establish procedures for the operators activity, leaves little room for deviance per se and for innovation. But, on the other hand, neither the contexts where aircraft operations take place are stable nor the bio psychosocial dimensions of the pilots themselves are. It is therefore obvious that deviances actually exist and that new productions happen. For that reason, it is necessary to make a very accurate analysis that allows us to question ourselves about the meaning these new productions acquire, the factors they are determined by, and the criteria under which pilots make a particular “discretional decision that goes beyond the available normatives or that fills in a space which has not been considered in these normatives. This research presents the study of a case conducted in Argentina on the observation in the cockpit of a full domestic commercial flight (from its planning in the operation room to its posterior ending in the gate), and on the interviews to the pilots and other key informants. The field work results analysis shows that not considered and unexpected factors arise repeatedly in flight activities, forcing the crew to apply its own criteria. This study reveals that “new practices actually exist, implemented by pilots in order to regulate the tension between the rationale of production and the rationale of safety.
