A Zen cushion for better sitting posture
A Zen cushion was developed to improve the sitting posture on chairs. The cushion is cut 25° toward the leg and is used on the seat of an ordinary chair. It lets users straighten their backs and support their weight on their feet on the floor. Pressure mapping of a users lower body showed that the cushion distributed the users weight. The load at the lower back lumbar spine at the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae (L4/L5) was simulated for 28 participants using a body mechanics model. The simulated load when using the cushion compared to not using the cushion for all participants was an average of 93.8%.
