Usability evaluations in the development process of portable navigation devices

The user interface improvement process for a new model of portable car navigation device was described. The authors discovered issues in using original Sanyo NVM-4070 model and conducted usability tests to compare a new prototype to the original at planning phase and just before production phase. Seven participants were required to operate two models for designated tasks. Completion time and subjective irritation score were measured for each task. The new model was found better in the second test and was put into US market.
