Work ability and healthy and unhealthy group in small and medium sized enterprises workers’ in Brazil

The objective of this study was to evaluate the workers work ability and to compare healthy and unhealthy group. A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Wholesale and Flower Market area with around 1000 micro and small sized companies. A questionnaire with socio-demographic data, life-style, work conditions and the Work Ability Index was answered. The sample included 1006 workers -healthy group n=369 (36.68%) and unhealthy group n=637 (63.32%). The not healthy group was composed by workers that referred at least one of the following complaints: with complaints during the last 15 days; pain during the last six months; pain during the last week; using medicine or answered that their “health state compared to other people your age was rather or very poor. The mean age of healthy group was 32.3 years (11.5) and the unhealthy group was 34.2 years (11.4). The WAI average was 44.24 (3.22) for healthy and 41.26 (4.73) for unhealthy group. In the logistic regression model WAI, sex, function, pause, accident, work and life satisfaction, tiredness, stress, a second job, time pressure at work, overtime and sleep was correlated with healthy group model. The results showed that some aspects of work organization were correlated with healthy group workers and work ability and ought to be considered when planning workplace health promotion and intervention actions.
