The application of ISO 14738 as a method to investigate the reachability of checkout devices
One of the main factors which can cause work related musculoskeletal disorders is the assumption of awkward postures. In some cases the causes can depend on uncomfortable or no appropriate collocation of some devices indispensable to carry out the work. Authors decided to investigate the reachability of a checkout workstation by applying ISO 14738 1 requirements. This specific standard allows to perform an anthropometric analysis of workstations at no -mobile machinery by taking into account some peculiar aspects as field of vision, working area limits for arms and space requirements for legs and feet in sitting position. Finally the authors suggest a new arrangement of the devices which can be useful to optimize their collocation in order to avoid critical movement and awkward postures.
