It is recognized that significant variations in physical characteristics exists between humans. With that said, understanding human physical variation becomes important to designers or for that matter any individual involved with designing a product. The knowledge could then be used to determine the design specification (i.e. based on statistical data about the distribution of body dimensions in the population) of a product. The individuals utilizing this knowledge include but are not limited to consumer product designers, industrial product designers, apparel designers, shoe designers, work place designers, ergonomists, and even suit designers for astronauts..
