Prevalence of upper eztremity musculoskeletal symptoms among Swedish pig farmers. A gender problem
The aim of this investigation was to carry out a cross-section postal questionnaire study dealing with the perceived musculoskeletal problems among female and male pig farmers in large-scale production. The response rate was 70% (288/410). More than 10% of those who answered the questionnaire had missing the gender data. Three different questionnaires were used: the general standardized Nordic questionnaire dealing with musculoskeletal symptoms, a questionnaire for the analysis of occurrence of numbness, reduced muscle strength in the wrists and hands; and occupational factors were screened by a special questionnaire. The results showed the musculoskeletal problems were high among both male and female pig farmers. The women had significantly more symptoms than the men regarding the upper extremities. Problems such numbness, reduced muscle strength, aching wrists and fingers and wrists etc.., were significantly more common among women. Occupational factors dealing with the size of the pig farms were not related to the presence of symptoms. Additional studies are needed to investigate the putative mechanism and development of new techniques that are adapted to the demand and skills of the female and male pig farmers to reduce the musculoskeletal problems
