Investigation of Common Construction Materials Weight and Related Manual Lifting Task Observations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the weights of common construction materials and related physical workloads in the construction field. First, a review of the literature related to ergonomics role in construction was conducted. Then a register of common construction materials was created using inputs from trades people identifying the most used materials. Next, the manual lifting observation data collection sheet was prepared in an Excel program. Thirteen trades/occupations participated in this study. A total of 144 observations were taken at construction job sites in the Midwestern United States. The Revised NIOSH 1991 Lifting Equation was used to determine the Recommended Weight Limit (RWL) and Lifting Index (LI) for each task condition. The practice of effective ergonomic assessment tools to mitigate work-related low back pain and disability are discussed in the paper.
