Quick assessment and fatigue-based measurement methods in determining high risk jobs in overhead construction work
The purposes of this study were to apply and compare two different approaches in determining jobs with high risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The first approach was based on quick assessment methods (including OWAS, RULA, and REBA) that have commonly been used to quickly assess the risk level of MSDs. The second one was based on changes in fatigue parameters since fatigue has also been associated with MSDs. Nevertheless, lack of information is available pertaining to comparing between these two approaches. Construction area was selected due to its high prevalence and incidence of MSDs. A field survey was done. Four high risk jobs among overhead construction works were selected based on musculoskeletal discomfort survey (using the Nordic questionnaire) and management opinions. A total of 11 workers were chosen who daily perform the jobs. In the first approach, work sampling method was conducted for five consecutive days with 25 observations per each day. In each observation, scores of OWAS, RULA, and REBA were computed. The final score was calculated as the mean value from the five days. The scores were also computed for each element of job. In the second approach, level of fatigue increment were quantified based on changes in heart rate (HR), hand grip force, and rating of perceived discomfort (using Borg CR-10 scale). The data were collected every 90 minutes from the same 11 workers for five days (8 hour work per day). Baseline measure was taken prior to work for each day. Results of the study showed that the selected jobs based on the existing condition had moderate-high risk of musculoskeletal disorder. Results of both methods varied, and were discussed.
