Ergonomics for Children:An Intervention Program for Elementary Schools
We present an educational intervention program in Ergonomics, to be taught by the schools physical education (PE) teacher, in a special ergonomics class supplementing regular PE classes. The program was delivered to elementary school children in the 4th to 6th grades during the 2007/08 school year. The PE teacher was a graduate of the program Ergonomics in the Life Cycle, taught to PE students at the Kibbutzim College of Education in Israel for the past 11 years. The intervention programs goal is to educate young children for balanced posture and body function with correct, efficient movement patterns in order to prevent back pain and other posture problems. Studies clearly indicate the rising frequency of such problems in the lower grades, due mainly to inefficient mechanical functioning beginning at an early age. The intervention program, which combines theoretical knowledge of body sciences together with adapted movement activities, addresses five main topics: (a) meaning and history of ergonomics, (b) the human body: structure and function, (c) sitting and sitting in front of the computer, (d) lifting and carrying, (e) movement patterns, balanced posture and body awareness. The intervention was followed by empirical research; data analysis is currently in process. The program was accepted enthusiastically by the participating children, their parents and the entire school staff. As a result, the program will be continued and expanded to other schools. We expect the school system to incorporate these ergonomics lessons as supplements to the existing PE curriculum delivered to children throughout their years of growth and development.
