Adjustable Ranges of VDT Workstation for Thai Children to Improve their Seated Posture during Computer Use

At present, Thai children use the desktop computer both at school and their home to search for information, prepare reports, chat with their friends, and play video games. However, virtually all video display terminal (VDT) workstations are designed for computer users who are adults. This paper is intended to evaluate childrens seated postures at four common VDT workstations: (1) fixed height chair and writing desk, (2) fixed height chair and computer table, (3) adjustable chair and writing desk, and (4) adjustable chair and computer table. Thai children (both boys and girls) with ages between six and sixteen years are included in this evaluation. The childrens seated postures are evaluated analytically and appropriate adjustment devices (including the adjustment settings) are recommended. Based on their anthropometric data, the adjustable ranges of the seat height, keyboard height, and monitor height which will enable Thai children to sit with the correct seated posture during computer use are proposed.
