The occupational health of machine operators in the fields of forestry and ezcavation

The work of machine operators includes numerous factors which have an influence on operators occupational health. These might be positive such as outdoor conditions or negative such as piecework contracts. In addition, worksites are changing, which increases the challenges faced by the occupational health service (OHS). Cooperation is needed between employers, employees and the OHS in order to create solutions that help promote occupational health and safety among workers in this field. The aims of the study were to clarify machine operators work, occupational safety and health, and expectations and cooperation regarding the OHS. Two machinery enterprises (employing 60 machine operators) and their occupational health services participated in the study. Two thirds of the machine operators and four occupational health professionals filled in the questionnaire. The most common risk factors of the work were physical factors (e.g. vibration) and accidents. Operators perceived that they could maintain a good level of occupational health and safety by adopting a healthy lifestyle, by being careful and by keeping machines in good working order. In most cases, the operators wanted the OHS to participate in areas involving the operators individual wellbeing by motivating and following up, and by assessing the ability of the worker. The OHS hoped to obtain more information concerning workers sickness absences, work accidents and workrelated diseases. The results of the questionnaire helped both the entrepreneurs and the OHS to plan joint actions which are relevant for improving operators occupational safety and health in this field.
