Efficient Replay Formats in Chat-Based CSCL for Re-Learning
The present study focuses on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and efficient replay formats for later re-learning. CSCL is often conducted using a chat environment. A frequent problem with conventional chat is the incoherence of contributions to the learning discourse. The ‘learning protocol approach requires learners to explicitly indicate the relationship of their chat contribution to the learning discourse in order to increase its coherence. In this study we examined if the structure created by learning protocol discourses can help learners to use the recorded discourse for later re-learning. We experimentally compared groups of learners who received a re-learning format showing the structure of their learning discourse based on the relationships generated originally by the learners or generated post hoc by raters. In addition, the elaboration of re-learning formats and the given assistance for re-learning purposes was examined. Results indicate that highly elaborated replay formats are not obligatory for efficient re-learning. Implications for CSCL are discussed.
