Semantic coherence variation for new product development
This paper presents a study of applying Latent Semantic Analysis to study design teams verbal communication. We took into consideration the stage factor by analysing communication in each design stage separately. Two methods were used to measure the intra-stage semantic coherence and intra-stage participant affiliation. The results suggested desirable semantic coherence and participant affiliation variation pattern for new product development. In conceptual stage a low semantic coherence and participant affiliation are expected. In system-level design high levels of semantic coherence and participant affiliation are desirable, whereas in detailed design more investigation is needed on account of other factors.
