Effects of Design Feature and Training on Traffic Sign Comprehension between Different User Groups

This experiment investigated the effects of relationships between the feature of traffic sign and cultural differences in comprehension between the Taiwanese and Vietnamese users. The subjects was rated the sign feature of sixty-five Taiwan traffic signs. The experiment employed the training to enhance comprehension and retention. The experiment for sign comprehension tested for all participants prior to training, and tested for all participants immediately following training, and one month after training. The experiment was conducted with thirty Taiwanese and thirty Vietnamese subjects. The results showed that traffic sign were significant difference between these two countries. The traffic sign of training were significant factors for comprehension. The comprehension of a sign varied with the five design feature: familiarity, concreteness, simplicity, meaningfulness, and semantic closeness of the sign. The two groups of comprehension for five features: semantic closeness, meaningfulness, concreteness, familiarity and simplicity. Semantic closeness was the high scores for comprehension and the simplicity was the lowest comprehension. The best design of traffic signs, which were the well understand initially, and the least comprehension dropping after one month later. In order to design more friendly traffic signs, it is suggested the designers according the importance relative of the five sign characteristics.
