Perceived Discomforts in Daily Activities among Aged, Handicapped, and Pregnant Users in Korea

This study analyzed perceived discomforts and their reasons in various daily activities of Korean aged, handicapped and pregnant persons, and derived universal design factors based on four characteristics of human functions (physical, cognitive, perceptual, and affective capacities). A total of eighty persons participated in a one to one interview about thirty-six daily activities, using Borgs CR10 scale. The handicapped and pregnant complained about almost all of the daily activities, while the young and middle-aged and the aged complained about some specific activities. The large majority of the reasons of discomfort were related to physical and affective capabilities, however, the reasons of each user group showed different characteristics. Thus, different universal design factors were identified, considering the results of each user group. This study can be used as a basic resource to understand the characteristics of the daily activities of Korean aged, handicapped, and pregnant persons. The derived design factors can also be applied to design related products and facilities universally.
