School ergonomics: inventory of conditions in basic teaching in Tunisia

Raising the school ergonomics question amounts to locating the specific problems affecting the individuals in this specific medium which is the school and to proposing solutions. Our descriptive observation study tried to bring out the inventory of pupils studying conditions in the schools at the first cycle of the basic teaching in Tunisia. Abnormalities and dysfunctions are to be announced: pupils move on foot in 73, 6% of cases for a daily average distance of 1562 Mr. The wearing of a school bag was a difficult task for them since its weight was of an average 3.32 kg representing 12% of their average body weight and for 66, 4% of them, this ratio was equal to or higher than 10% of the average body weight. The furniture used, which does not take into account anthropometric characteristics differences of the pupils, the desks provision and computer material use without respect for the on-screen work standards are elements which make the pupils posture constraining and expose them to back ache and several musculo-skeletal disorders. Non homogeneous weak or dazzling Lighting, (54 luxes to 1400 luxes), reflective surfaces of Plexiglas tables and fine writing by the pen markers on these tables make reading and writing tasks difficult for pupils. The absence of infrastructure adapted to sports activities, the scuffles on entry and exit to classes and to school as well as the hyperactivity during break are traumatic risk factors. The schools doors opening on a public highway without protection or clear and sufficient indications expose the pupils to the risk of traffic accidents. The contribution of school ergonomics in building design, school organization and functioning, choice of furniture and material used, could make the pupil work environment more adapted to his physiology and to the tasks and functions requirements necessary to the success of the education system. It can, in fact, prevent pathologies and risks during a fundamental period in the individual physical and psychic development.
