Skills transfer between ezperienced and new hospital workers

This paper presents a progress report on a study of the transfer of vocational skills among health care staff (nurses, nurses assistants) at a French public hospital. The term transfer is taken to mean the sharing of knowledge regarding their scope of practice between people of differing seniority. The example given -a situation in which two health care staff members of differing seniority instruct a trainee in a rehabilitation unit undergoing in-depth reorganization - sheds light on a variety of aspects of this transfer. First, the training given catalyzes analysis of ones own practice (in both new and experienced workers) as well as transfer to others. Second, the transfer takes place not between two people, as previously, but within a network involving a series of different players in a position to organize and support it. Lastly, transfer takes place in both directions - from the experienced to the new worker and also from new worker, who has skills to contribute, to the more experienced worker. In the case study, changes in the unit (changes in the pathologies of the patients served) called the practice of the older workers into question and focused attention on the previous careers and experience of health care workers.
