Early retirement among teachers: what work-related malaise, stress and hardship are driving the trend?
This paper presents a research project focused on the careers of primary and secondary school teachers as they near retirement. This is a major concern because more and more teachers are retiring early in France as well as in Quebec, Switzerland, Belgium and other countries, and this despite incentives put in place to encourage teachers to work longer in order to finance retirement. The purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of the relationship between these early retirements and the work experience of older teachers. What factors are contributing to their decision to retire early? Is the decision related to their working conditions? Are the reasons the same across all grades taught? Should distinctions be drawn between different types of teaching jobs based on specific teaching conditions?
