The ezamination of evaluation method using accelerometers for physical workload

Background:Working posture and movement are important factor which is prescribes a physical work load. It is necessary to evaluate the movement of the upper-body and the lower half of the body. However, the simple and easy workload evaluation method has not yet been developed. Therefore we devised a physical workload evaluation tool using an accelerometer and examined a method to evaluate the physical workload of the whole body by adding the movement of the head and waist together. In addition we evaluated the movement of the upper part of a persons body by using accelerometer. Methods:The subjects were five male employees of a metal casting factory molding worker and the die maintenance worker. The workers wore the accelerometer to a helmet side of the head and a hip each of the parallelism. We used exercise strength which accelerometer counts were recorded as an index of the quantity of the physical workload. The heart rate was recorded as an index of the work strain of the workers. The workers movements were recorded using a video camera, and the work posture was visually examined and qualitatively compared to the output from the accelerometer. A change with the lapse of time of the intensity of accelerometer counts that had been obtained from the waist at all object persons working hours and the heart rate were examined. And a change with the lapse of time of the intensity of activity and the heart rate by which the intensity of activity of the head and the intensity of activity of the waist were added up were examined. Results:We could observe that it accompanied the rise of the intensity of activity and the phenomenon of the heart rate increase in working time. And it was shown to evaluate it adding up movement strength of the head and the waist in all subjects compared with the case only in the irresolute attitude of the head or waist part. And it was shown that the correlation coefficient with the rate of increase of the heart rate had risen intentionally in statistics. Moreover, when subjects worked bending forward, the phenomenon of the heart rate increase accompanying the increase of the intensity of activity by which that of the waist was subtracted from the intensity of activity of the head was observe. Conclusion: When the physical workload during actual work is evaluated, it is necessary to think by dividing into the movement of the upper-body and the lower half of the body. And it was suggested to be able to presume an actual amount of the physical workload by installing the accelerometer in two places, the head and the waist, and adding up the intensity of activity obtained from them. And we can pick up the work to use the upper-body such as bending forward chiefly at time zone that strength has risen when the intensity of activity by which that of the waist was subtracted from the intensity of activity of the head.
