IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ERGONOMICS PROGRAM IN A LARGE OIL COMPANY: A STRATEGIC AXIS OF PERMANENT DEVELOPMENT OF WORKING SYSTEMS

This briefing presents the various stages of implementation of an Ergonomics Program in a large oil company, in which several achievements and challenges follow this experience over the past six years up to the present moment. The ergonomics development in this company aims to improve the performance status and reliability of its working systems, to promote health, safety and welfare for their employees. This became possible through the mobilization and integration of different skills, such as training, technical-operational, organizational and management of the Company, after being approved by its management. This company has accumulated innovative knowledge in the various areas of exploration, drilling and refining, due to research investments. This allows the use of much more modern and sophisticated technological resources to meet its development and in this context, Ergonomics contributes to the balance between of the demands created by this current reality and the world of work both individual and collective. The actions of the Company ergonomics initially prioritized the improvement of working conditions in their physical aspects in the working processes, equipment and tools, increasing the expansion of its actions towards the organizational working issues through a deeper understanding of their activities as continuous industry process and its complex systems. Being aware of the importance of preventing new situations in the working scenario that might repeat previous problems, the company has begun to act pro-actively including ergonomics in its new projects. In this briefing, we will present the four main topics of the Implementation Program: 1)The General Manager of the site is responsible for the actions of improvement in ergonomics in this process; 2)Training in Ergonomics Plan; 3)The inclusion of Ergonomic design in new projects; 4) Active employee participation in the various stages of the process. We will show some examples of the results which had been implemented in various sites of the company: intervention in new projects of the operational control centre room in refineries and 5 oil platforms; biomechanical aspects to improve access to lines and valves in 4 refineries; interventions in electrical panels and engine performance tests in a laboratory in the Research Centre. According to the findings above, we propose to present the first results of the Ergonomics Program in an oil company, in which the management support for its implementation is essential, as well as the investments in multidisciplinary training. Finally, the Ergonomics in this company takes on new responsibilities to participate in continuing improvement of the whole companys performance to report human aspects within the organization and its Ergonomic design.
