Implementing Solutions for Ergonomic Problems

One of the major limiting factors in the development of Ergonomics in South Africa as well as Africa is the lack of standardization of the Ergonomics process. Historically ergonomic reports are often perceived to be too theoretical, not practically applicable, as well as a lack of consensus in report writing and data collection. Furthermore, many employees have little or no access to the vast knowledge that makes ergonomics application vital to industry, a shared concern with almost two-thirds of the worlds population (Helali and Shanhnavaz 2003). Based on these concerns and our experience working in industry, the development of tools that will standardize, quantify and reliably assess ergonomic risks in industry becomes an essential tool for the promotion and implementation of Ergonomics in South African Industry. This paper will discuss the ErgoKinetics calculators developed in 2004 by Kennedy in order to help address these issues.
