Heavy work in offices: A case in a Venezuelan University
The main objective was to make the ergonomic evaluation for work condition in offices of a Venezuelan University to identify dangerous processes and to propose changes. Methods: There uses the triangulation of investigation (qualitative-quantitative); Deparis Method and Observation of Working Positions; Individual and Collective Interview; Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Groups. The labour population is 120 (80 women, 40 men). The sample was fixed in 8 females which work as secretaries, according to the inclusions criteria Results: in the interviews the workers said they had health problems, visual weakness shoulders ache, lumbar pains, anxiety and fatigue. Most of them were causes because of the constant changes in the organization, they inform fear of lose their jobs and most of them feel unsecure. The workers said the environment is noisy, too much dust, pigeon excrement, uncomfortable furniture, lack of the health protection policies and insurance, lack of maintenance of the work equipment. They identified as dangerous working conditions: poor lighting, noisy work environment, uncomfortable furniture, double role as woman (housekeeping and workers), constant changes of supervisor and unstable work contract. Observed tasks were: a) Dealing with the public as give information to the internal personnel and external as well, the demand is high and affects the worker psychologically; b) Revision, transcription and sending documents from one place to another, this require high level of concentration; c) Manipulate and classify books booklets, and other class of information taking into account files techniques; d) Keep the office neat and clean; e) Reception, handling, and sending of the mail system. The work changes its performance constantly. The place of work is changeable and implies from two to seven cycles of work per day, the time for the cycle is an hour and seven minutes. This type of work is related to the work in other office. The observed interruptions were for: needs of documents in other office, orientation necessity, lack of equipments, electricity breakdowns, lack of materials and equipments, equipment failure, the worker sat in a wrong posture, some workers lifted heavy weight and did other type of work too risky for them. The location of the working equipment, chairs and disks are in the wrong place. Inadequate positions, long seated positions. Raising weight was observed in inadequate form. The location of the office equipments and furniture are inadequate. There exist problems of organization of the work for deficiencies in the distribution of implements and equipments of work that generates requirements in the work and represents a heavy lift for the workers. Conclusions: The work done by the secretaries is too demanding because of the bad working conditions, bad organization of the work, wrong work equipment, wrong working tools; all of these represent a high demand work task from the point of view emotional, psychological and physical. Its necessary to do a better work organization, supply the work places with the comfortable and necessary equipment and furniture. Organize physical environment. Plan an excellent maintenance plan and do a schedule according to the necessity of the place.
