Supporting the human role in intensive care nursing
The aim of this study is to form design implications for ICU workflow support embedded in nursing informatics applications. The focus is on supporting the human role in intensive care nursing (i.e., dealing with stress and particularly negative emotions).Twenty-eight intensive care staff members from seven different hospitals were asked to recount an imposing event they experienced from the perspective of their human role. Regarding this role, the participants mentioned 32 unique strategies how they dealt with stress and emotions. Examples are attending formal team evaluations focused on the behaviour of the different team members, making sure that there is a clear division of the roles between team members during time critical events, realizing that you have the support of the whole team when you disagree with a doctor or a patient, or using humour. Based on these strategies design implications are proposed for workflow support embedded in nursing informatics applications.
