Design framework for healthcare systems
At the start of a design process the design team often knows little about the user group, the context and the interaction between the user and their environment. When a design team is involved in the development of a healthcare system, they need to gain a total overview that often goes beyond their own knowledge. Medical specialists are professional users with specific needs, work conditions, language, culture, and work environment. For a design team the first step to understand the problems of the user is gaining insight into the profession of the user group. A design team will get familiar with their profession and problems by literature study, observations, and interviews. The obtained information from practice will be a good start for the design team in the design process. The basic design cycle according to Roozenburg and Eekels is a framework that can be used during product development. This paper discusses two cases of product development regarding the different stages of the basic design cycle integrated with the Participatory Design methodology.
