Emphasizing Role of Ergonomics in Sustainable Development of Bali

Since 1986, six sustainable development problems have been identified by Bali Human Ecology Study Group (Bali-HESG). The problems becoming more worse and worse as there are no principle steps have been taken ever since. Authoritys bad conducts supported by short term gains mind set have created additional problems and emphasized the previous ones as well. Meanwhile the terrorist bombings and global economical crisis made the problems becoming more complex and multi dimensional in characters. In the meantime efforts to overcome the problems through separate arrogant steps practically could not solve the problems completely. Intensive studies organized by Bali-HESG came finally to a conclusion that the root causes of all those complex problems are the in holistic planning and poor law enforcement in carrying out development in the island. To overcome by enhancing the capabilities of responsible human resources to carry out holistic planning and law enforcement have been proposed. As there is no serious steps have been taken by the authority, Bali HESG took several actions to anticipate the situation. Since 1969 more than 60 times Integrated Ergonomic SHIP approach workshops, which covers more than 5000 participants, have been carried out to train them to think and act holistically. Ergonomics, tourism and environmental postgraduate students (Master and Doctor), have been trained about the problems and anticipation steps needed. Developing similar concern and commitment for sustainable development of Bali among key stakeholders become essential conducts. Ones should consciously understood that Bali is just a small island, development planning especially cultural tourism should be holistically planned, it must be supported by strong law enforcement. Development of Bali meant development of Bali as a whole and not development in Bali only. Tourism development must be oriented to length of stay and based on supply led. The three economical potentials (agriculture-tourism-SMEs) must be developed in harmony, and sustainable development supported sectors must be wisely managed. Total ergonomics approach must be utilized wisely, if possible during the planning stages to attain healthy, safety, comfortable and efficient work system and products. Problems must be identified and solved through Systemic, Holistic, Interdisciplinary and Participatory approach. Technology being used must using Appropriate Technology approach. It must be comprehensively assessed through six criteria, namely it must be technically, economically, ergonomically and social culturally sound, safe energy and preserve not destructing the environment. By doing so, effective utilization of natural resources, maintaining of cultures and its dynamics, and last but not least the effective and efficient use of the natural resources to enhance the quality of life of the people become a reality. Through total ergonomic SHIP approach and appropriate technology application we shall finally be able to solve the complex problems and achieving simultaneously humane, competitive, and sustainable work system and products.
