Mediating links between sustainable development and occupational wellbeing in the Finnish contezt
The aim of this study was to identify mediating links between sustainable development and occupational wellbeing in the Finnish context at the organizational level. Sustainable development is a global paradigm including the promotion of wellbeing and quality of life of current and future generations. In the past decade, knowledge about sustainable development and its connections to working life has increased considerably. Healthy workers, clean working environments, efficient organizations, fair leadership, continuous development and recyclable products are critical elements of working life in terms of sustainable development and occupational wellbeing. Investment in occupational wellbeing is profitable and recouped by cutting down costs and increasing productivity and the quality of work. However, there is very limited scientific information on the links between sustainable development and occupational wellbeing. The method used was a systematic review from four databases. The search terms were work, health, wellbeing/well-being and organisation/organization. The combination of the terms identified 820 scientific articles according to inclusion criteria. Finally, four articles were chosen to the systematic review. In each article the elements of sustainable development were linked to wellbeing at work through the employees learning for improving their professional competence. In one article, leadership appeared as the main link between sustainable development and occupational wellbeing. The number of relevant articles found was small and the term “sustainable development as such was not found in the articles. However, this study initiated the development of a hypothetical model where learning is the mediating link between sustainable development and occupational wellbeing. In the near future, the relevancy of this hypothetical model will be tested with a larger systematic review and investigated in actual work situations.
