Cooperative Craft Production As An Alternative Of Sustainable Development Of A Community: a Case Study Of The Sisal Hemp Thread
Sisal (A. sisalana) is a plant from Mexico, its cultivation is more present in semi-arid regions of developing countries. Brazil has the largest world production of sisal -70%. Once the leaf is processed it is obtained fibers that can be used both in industries and for handicraft (EMBRAPA, 2008). The current article aims to show solidarity economy and sustainable development in the craft production as an alternative of social inclusion and work and income generation for poor excluded populations both in the job market and socially. Craft production stimulates the settlement of people in their own communities and local economic development, thus becoming an option for income generation and complementation, besides supporting local production. The aim of the current paper is to demonstrate an experience which included social inclusion and income generation through cooperative craft production from hemp processed fiber developed by the Associa(c)(a)o de Artes(a)os de Lajes Pintadas, an Association located in a small municipality of Rio Grande do Norte, a state from Brazilian north-east, whose population has limited economic alternatives. The methodology is based on ergonomic and anthropotecnology and is also based on interactional methods for the situations observed. It is described the steps of production of different items, from the initial processing of hemp until its sales. It is also shown the craftswoman population, characteristic aspects of craft work organization and its consequences on the product, market and the craftswomen themselves. It is also presented recommendations for improving work conditions and sustainable development of the activity, considering anthropotecnological aspects so that it does not interfere in the cultural aspect that such art has for the region and its producers.
