Cognitive human behavior model validation and visualization in 3D simulated virtual environment

The study was to establish a method (tool) for designers to validate and visualize their cognitive human behavior model in a 3D virtual environment. The advantages of tool would allow users to visualize the simulated humans behaviors and any conflictions happened between tasks in their proposed virtual workspace. Method: A case study was to use a cognitive model to simulate human behaviors of tracking a randomly moving target on a computer screen by mouse. The simulated manikin will look at the moving target all the time except looking at an emergence light whenever it is flashing. The location of a moving target is used as feedback information to trigger the execution sequences of the behavior model. Results: The results demonstrate that the integrated tool has following advantages: (1) Visualize the virtual human behavior driven by a cognitive task modeling and precisely representing of cognitive model task behaviors (such as, task interrupted, task paused and restarted, task delayed behavior etc.) in 3D virtual environment. (2) Feedback information from 3D environment (such as distance to target, manikins hand and target location, and task completion) will be sent back to the cognitive model to make dynamically changes in executive orders during the simulation. (3) Human posture and activity analysis tools are available for user to analyze ergonomics issues related to designed working space. As a result, the model designer can easily simulate different scenarios or plant layouts with human behaviors in 3D environment. Conclusion: The potential applications of the study include abilities to verify and visualize a simulated manikin to reach designed targets, to analyze the relationship between task timing and task failure, and to evaluate ergonomic issues in a concept designed system. It could also be applied in a VR environment with human in the loop for training purpose.
