Perceptions of Cybersecurity: An ezploratory analysis
The present research examined participants reports of engaging in security-related actions while computing and how they conceptualize computer security. Two hundred fifty-nine participants completed a survey that assessed how frequently they engaged in computing behaviors that might place their personal information at risk, how they rated the importance of various personal data types, how they rated the acceptability of particular security-related activities, and what sources of information they utilized to learn about computer security. Results indicated that participants routinely engaged in risky behaviors such as using the same user name/password combinations. Because some data types (e.g., personal financial information) were more valued than others, participants reported a heightened willingness to accept the annoyances associated with protective behaviors designed to guard valued information from theft. Implications and future directions for enhancing computer security are discussed.
