How do people position keyboards?
In computer workstations where the alphabetic section of a keyboard a with number pad is centered to the median plane, the number pad generally causes people to mouse farther from the median plane than is efficient. The present two-part study investigated whether people adjust the keyboard to account for mousing when the keyboard has a number pad. In the first part, the locations of keyboards with number pads in a computer lab were measured at the end of each day for a week. The keyboards were found to be positioned left of the centered position. In the second part, participants were videoed performing a controlled mousing and keyboarding task on a computer. The position where people left a keyboard after using it was representative of its location during use, validating the applicability of the methodology of the first part in the measure of position of keyboard use.
