REGIONAL DIFFERENCES IN COGNITIVE/BEHAVIORAL/ PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: KOREAN, AMERICAN AND GERMAN DRIVERS

Drivers in different regions of the world have their own characteristics that reflect their races, customs, environments, histories, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and so on. Thus, customized vehicle design considering regional differences is needed to improve the competitiveness in the market. This study aims to investigate regional differences in cognitive/behavioral/physical characteristics of Korean, American and German drivers. In this study, 41 types of driver characteristics were defined and classified into 16 groups under 3 categories (cognitive/behavioral/physical). Cognitive characteristics and behavioral characteristics of Korean, American and German drivers were collected by a questionnaire survey. Design features of devices and systems in a vehicle were analyzed and 61 critical features were selected from the survey. 80 subjects from each country participated in the survey, and they were interviewed about how they use the features, a preferred design of the features, the reasons, and etc. Physical characteristics were analyzed by a literature survey of anthropometric information. The data of an average person, 95%ile of male and 5%ile of female in each country were obtained and 23 anthropometric dimensions were compared. This study is a basic research for analyzing regional differences in driver characteristics in terms of cognitive/behavioral/physical characteristics. It is expected that the characteristics analyzed in this study can be applied to designing a customized automobile interior.
